Dining Table Plans
A dining table built from sheet goods that does not feel thin: the top gets a doubled edge all round, the panel legs are two layers glued together, and a deep stretcher under the middle of the top ties the legs and stops the top from sagging. The legs are set in from the ends so chairs fit there too. It works as a kitchen table too: make it shorter and it seats four. It suits beginners: straight cuts, glue and screws.

How it is built
- The legs are set in 250 mm from each end, so a chair fits at the ends too.
- Each leg is two layers of board glued and screwed together, 36 mm thick.
- The stretcher runs under the middle of the top between the legs and is screwed to both legs and to the top.
- Glue the edge strips under the top all round before you fit the legs.
Common mistakes
- Leaving out the stretcher: the legs rack and the top sags in the middle.
- Setting the legs flush with the ends: nobody can sit there.
Tools you need
- Track saw or circular saw with a guide
- Drill/driver
- Clamps
- Sander
Frequently asked questions
How many people does it seat?
About one person per 600 mm (24 in) of edge: the default 1800 × 900 mm table seats six, eight with one at each end.
What board is best for the top?
18 mm birch plywood or MDF for paint, with a hard-wearing finish. The doubled edge makes it look and feel 36 mm thick.
How high should a dining table be?
720–760 mm (28–30 in), with about 250–300 mm between the chair seat and the underside of the top. See our dining table height guide.
