Shoe Cabinet & Shoe Rack Plans

A shoe cabinet is a shallow cabinet for the hallway: about 300–350 mm deep, with shelves spaced for shoes and a plinth so the doors clear the floor. These plans let you set the width, height, depth and number of shelves; the doors and shelves are sized for you.

Shoe Cabinet & Shoe Rack Plans

Adult shoes are up to 320 mm long, so 340 mm deep is enough for flat shelves. Tall, shallow cabinets can tip over: screw them to the wall. For a closet or a mudroom, an open shoe rack is quicker to build and lets shoes air.

Frequently asked questions

Shoe cabinet or shoe rack?

A cabinet with doors hides the shoes and keeps dust off; an open rack is faster to build, cheaper and lets damp shoes dry.

How deep should a shoe cabinet be?

At least 320 mm for flat shelves. Slimmer cabinets (around 200 mm) need tilted shelves.

How much space does a pair of shoes need?

About 200–250 mm of shelf width and 150–180 mm of height per pair; boots need 400 mm or more.
