Laundry Pedestal Plans

A washer and dryer pedestal: a plywood platform that raises the machines about 15 in, so you load them without bending, with an open bay under each machine for a laundry basket. The top is two layers glued together, and a full-height panel stands under each side of every machine, so the weight goes straight to the floor. A lip along the front stops the machines from walking off when they spin. The defaults fit two 27 in machines side by side; set the width to 700 mm for a single washer pedestal. Building it takes a weekend with a saw and a drill.

How it is built

  • Glue and screw the two top layers together, and screw the top down into every upright panel.
  • Level the pedestal on the floor before the machines go on, and put anti-vibration pads under their feet.
  • Seal every face and edge: laundry rooms are damp and hoses leak.
  • Check that the doors of the machines still open over the front lip.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the top as a single layer: it flexes when the washer spins.
  • Stacking a dryer on a DIY pedestal: use the maker's stacking kit on the floor instead.

Tools you need

  • Circular saw with a guide or table saw

Frequently asked questions

What is a laundry pedestal?

A box that raises a front-load washer or dryer 10–16 in (250–400 mm) off the floor, so the door is at a comfortable height, usually with a drawer or space for a basket underneath.

How tall should a washer pedestal be?

Most are 12–16 in (300–400 mm). Higher than that and the machines vibrate more and the controls of a top-loader get hard to reach. The default is 380 mm (15 in).

Is a DIY pedestal strong enough?

Yes, built like this: a full washer weighs 200–300 lb (90–135 kg), and upright 3/4 in plywood panels under its feet carry many times that. The double top spreads the load and keeps it flat.

How wide should it be for a washer and dryer?

Most full-size machines are 27 in (686 mm) wide: two side by side need about 56–57 in (1420–1450 mm), with a little space between them. Measure your machines before you cut.
