FreePrefinished Plywood: What It Is and When to Use It
Prefinished plywood is hardwood plywood, usually maple or birch, with a clear UV-cured finish applied at the factory on one or both faces. It is mostly used for the inside of cabinets: the boxes come out of the saw already finished, so there is no sanding, staining or varnishing inside every cabinet. It costs a little more per sheet and saves a lot of time.
Types of prefinished plywood
| Type | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Prefinished maple | The standard for cabinet interiors: pale, even, clear UV finish. |
| Prefinished birch | Similar to maple, a little cheaper and with more figure. |
| White prefinished | A white UV coat for bright, easy-to-clean interiors. |
| Prefinished Baltic birch | Void-free core and a clear finish: drawers and shop furniture. |
| One side (G1S) or two sides (G2S) | Two finished faces for shelves and dividers seen from both sides. |
Joining prefinished plywood
Wood glue needs bare wood. Join prefinished plywood with dados and rabbets, where the glue meets cut, unfinished wood, or with pocket screws, confirmat screws or dowels. Where two finished faces meet, sand the finish off the glue area first.
Advantages
- No finishing inside the cabinets: saves days on a kitchen
- Hard, even UV finish that is easy to clean
- Flat hardwood plywood with good faces
- Clear or white finishes for light interiors
Drawbacks
- Costs more than unfinished plywood
- Glue does not stick to the finish: joints need dados, screws or sanded glue areas
- The finish scratches if sheets slide on each other
- Cannot be stained; painting needs a bonding primer
What it is used for
- Kitchen and bathroom cabinet boxes
- Shelves and drawer boxes
- Closet and wardrobe interiors
- Built-ins with painted or wood doors
Tips for working with Prefinished plywood
- Cut with a fine 60–80 tooth blade and the good face up on a table saw, down with a circular saw.
- Lay sheets on a blanket or foam, never slide them across each other.
- Glue only on raw wood: in dados and on edges, or sand the finish off where parts meet.
- Cover visible front edges with edge banding to match.
Frequently asked questions
Is prefinished plywood worth it for cabinets?
For a whole kitchen, usually yes: finishing the inside of 20 cabinet boxes by hand takes days, and a sprayed factory finish is more even and harder than most brushed finishes.
Can you paint or stain prefinished plywood?
It cannot be stained: the finish blocks it. To paint it, scuff-sand with 220 grit and use a bonding primer first.
What is prefinished maple plywood?
Maple-faced hardwood plywood with a clear UV finish, the most common prefinished sheet for cabinet interiors because of its pale, even colour.
