Bathroom Vanity Dimensions
A standard bathroom vanity is 21 in (53 cm) deep, 32–36 in (81–91 cm) high to the top of the counter, and comes in widths of 24, 30, 36, 48, 60 and 72 in (61–183 cm). Single-sink vanities are 18–48 in wide, double vanities start at 60 in. In a small bathroom, an 18 in deep vanity saves floor space; European vanities are 450–550 mm deep and about 850 mm high.
Vanity widths
| Width | Sinks | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 18–24 in (46–61 cm) | One small sink | Powder rooms, small bathrooms |
| 30 in (76 cm) | One | Small family bathrooms |
| 36 in (91 cm) | One | The most common single vanity |
| 42–48 in (107–122 cm) | One, with counter space | Larger bathrooms, a single sink with room to spare |
| 60 in (152 cm) | Two, tight | The minimum for a double vanity |
| 72 in (183 cm) | Two | The standard double vanity |
| 84 in and more | Two, plus a makeup area | Master bathrooms |
Vanity cabinet depth
| Vanity | Cabinet depth | Top depth |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 21 in (53 cm) | 22 in (56 cm) |
| Compact (small bathroom) | 16–18 in (41–46 cm) | 17–19 in |
| Deep | 22–24 in (56–61 cm) | 23–25 in |
| European | 450–550 mm | 460–560 mm |
| Wall cabinet or medicine cabinet above | 4–8 in (10–20 cm), or recessed 3 1/2 in |
The countertop overhangs the doors by about 1 in (25 mm) so water drips clear of them. A vessel sink sitting on the counter needs a deeper top, or the faucet ends up too far back to reach.
Vanity height
Standard vanities are 30–32 in high, comfort-height vanities 34–36 in, both measured to the top of the counter. With a vessel sink, lower the cabinet so the rim of the bowl ends up at 34–36 in. See bathroom vanity height for how to choose.
Double vanity dimensions
| Rule | Size |
|---|---|
| Minimum width | 60 in (152 cm) |
| Comfortable width | 72 in (183 cm) |
| Between sink centres | 30 in (76 cm) minimum, 36 in comfortable |
| Sink centre to a side wall | 15 in (38 cm) minimum |
| Counter space between the sinks | 12 in or more |
ADA vanity dimensions
An accessible vanity has its counter or sink rim no higher than 34 in (86 cm) and an open knee space below the sink: at least 27 in (69 cm) high, 30 in (76 cm) wide and 17–25 in deep. Pipes under the sink are wrapped so they cannot burn knees, and there is a 30 × 48 in clear floor space in front.
Clearances around a vanity
Leave at least 21 in (53 cm), better 30 in (76 cm), of clear floor in front of the vanity, and keep doors and drawers from hitting the toilet or the bathroom door when they open.
Building a vanity
A vanity is a base cabinet with a shallower depth and a cut-out in the back for the plumbing. Use moisture-resistant MDF or plywood, band every edge and seal the cut edges around the pipes. Our vanity plan sizes the carcass, doors and drawer from the width, height and depth you choose:
Frequently asked questions
What is the standard size of a bathroom vanity?
21 in (53 cm) deep, 32–36 in (81–91 cm) high to the top of the counter, and 24, 30, 36, 48, 60 or 72 in wide. The 36 in single vanity is the most common size.

What size vanity do you need for two sinks?
At least 60 in (152 cm); 72 in is more comfortable. Plumbing codes ask for 30 in between the sink centres and 15 in from each centre to a side wall.
