Mudroom Lockers Plans

Mudroom lockers for the entryway or the garage door: a row of open lockers, each with a bench seat, a cubby for shoes below it, a hook rail at the back and a cubby on top for hats and gloves. The dividers run from the bottom to the top and carry every seat and shelf, and the whole unit screws to the wall. It is a weekend project in plywood, cut with a track saw or a table saw.

How it is built

  • Dividers run from the bottom to the top and carry the seat, the top shelf and the hook rail of each locker.
  • Screw the hook rails to the dividers and through the back; hooks screwed into the thin back alone pull out.
  • Screw the unit to the wall studs through the top and the hook rails.
  • Band the front edges of the sides, dividers, seats and shelves.
  • The back comes in one piece per locker, so each fits a 4 × 8 sheet; the joints land on the dividers.

Common mistakes

  • Hanging hooks on the back panel only: wet coats are heavy.
  • Making the lockers deeper than 500 mm: they eat the hallway and the back becomes hard to reach.

Tools you need

  • Track saw or table saw
  • Drill/driver
  • Clamps
  • Stud finder
  • Edge banding iron

Frequently asked questions

What are standard mudroom locker dimensions?

Each locker 380–460 mm (15–18 in) wide, 400–450 mm (16–18 in) deep and 1800–2100 mm (72–84 in) tall, with the bench at 460 mm (18 in).

How deep should mudroom lockers be?

400–450 mm (16–18 in): deep enough for coats on hooks and boots on the floor, shallow enough not to block the hall.

Where do the hooks go?

On the hook rail at the back of each locker, about 1500 mm (60 in) from the floor for adults; add a second rail lower down for children.

Can I add doors?

Yes, to the top cubbies: use full-overlay doors with concealed hinges, sized like cabinet doors.
