Jewelry Box Plans

A wooden jewelry box: four walls on a thin bottom, a lid on two small hinges, and a tray that sits on two ledges at the top, with three compartments for rings and earrings above a deep space for necklaces and watches. It is an easy, small first project; build it from 10–12 mm (3/8–1/2 in) hardwood or Baltic birch plywood. Enter the outside size and the tray and every wall follow. It makes a good gift in walnut, cherry or cedar.

How it is built

  • Glue the four walls round the bottom on a flat surface and check the diagonals before the glue sets.
  • Fit the lid with two small butt hinges or a piano hinge, and add a lid stay or a short chain so it does not fall back.
  • Line the tray and the lower space with felt or velvet over thin card.

Common mistakes

  • Using 18 mm (3/4 in) boards: the box gets heavy and the tray tiny. 10–12 mm is right.
  • Fitting the tray tight: wood moves. Leave 1 mm all round so it lifts out freely.

Tools you need

  • Table saw or fine handsaw
  • Miter box or miter saw
  • Clamps
  • Small drill

Frequently asked questions

What wood is best for a jewelry box?

Thin hardwood such as walnut, cherry or maple, or 1/2 in (12 mm) Baltic birch plywood, which stays flat. Thin boards keep the box light and leave more room inside.

What size is a jewelry box?

Most are 10–14 in (250–350 mm) wide, 6–8 in (150–200 mm) deep and 4–6 in (100–150 mm) tall. The default is 300 × 200 × 120 mm (12 × 8 × 4 3/4 in).

How do I line a jewelry box?

Wrap felt or velvet round pieces of thin card cut 1 mm smaller than each compartment and press them in. Rolled strips of foam covered in fabric hold rings.

Is this a good beginner box?

Yes: it is a small wood box with square cuts. Glue the walls with simple butt or rabbet joints first; try miters once the box goes together square.
