Walk-In Closet Dimensions

A walk-in closet needs at least 4 ft (1.2 m) of width for hanging on one side and about 7 ft (2.1 m) for hanging on both sides: 24 in (61 cm) of hanging depth on each wall and an aisle of 24–36 in between them. The length can be anything that fits; most walk-in closets in new homes are 6–8 ft wide and 6–10 ft long. A U-shaped walk-in, with storage on three walls, needs about 7 × 7 ft.

A narrow walk-in closet works best as a long corridor: hanging on one wall, 12 in deep shelves or drawers on the other, and a 36 in aisle between them.

StorageDepth
Hanging clothes24 in (61 cm) from the wall, 22 in minimum
Shelves for folded clothes12–16 in (30–41 cm)

A hanger is 17–19 in wide, which is why hanging needs 24 in. Shallower closets work with the rod turned to face out, but then less fits. See standard closet depth for reach-in closets.

Planning tips

  • Draw the closet to scale and place the hanging first: it takes the most room.
  • Put long hanging where the closet is deepest, double hanging and drawers on the shorter walls.
  • Leave the corners for shelves: a rod cannot reach into a corner, so two rods meeting at a corner each lose 12 in.
  • Plan a light: built-in shelves and drawers shade the back of the closet.

Building the storage

A walk-in closet is filled with the same parts as a reach-in closet: shelf towers, drawer units, rods and long shelves on cleats. Our closet organizer plan builds the tower and shelves from the width and height you type, and the wardrobe plan a freestanding unit:

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum size for a walk-in closet?

About 4 ft wide and 4–5 ft deep (1.2 × 1.2–1.5 m), with hanging on one side only: 24 in of hanging space plus a 24 in aisle. With hanging on both sides, the minimum width is about 6 ft.
